Pastoral Support Button Information for Parents |
|
The wellbeing and safety of our students is of the utmost importance to the staff and governors at Highcliffe School. We know that the emotional and physical wellbeing of our students is vital to ensuring they are ready to learn and make the most of the many opportunities available to them at our school. If a student is having difficulties there are a range of ways that they can seek support. They can speak to their Tutor, Pastoral Lead/Head of Achievement (Years 7-11), Study Skills Mentor or Head of Year (Year 12-13).
However, sometimes, the first conversation is the most difficult, so students can complete an online form in MyHighcliffe by using the Pastoral Support Request link. This is also accessible through the wellbeing section of the school website. The request will be referred to the best person to help.
We recognise that sometimes young people may come home with a problem which causes a great deal of stress and anxiety, particularly if they feel that they can’t share this information before the next day. By being able to support your child to share this concern before the next school day, we hope that this will reduce anxiety about the issue as students will know that support will be put in place.
The Pastoral Support Button is not monitored in holidays or weekends. Therefore, if a young person has significant mental health concerns that can’t wait until the next school day, they should access support through one of the organisations signposted on the wellbeing section of the website for example Kooth, Shout, Childline or Dorset Mind Your Head. Here is the link to the Wellbeing Section of our website: Wellbeing | Highcliffe School
If you have concerns about immediate or significant risk of harm with regards to your child’s mental health, please contact your GP or take your child to A&E at your local hospital.
If parents have concerns, they should continue to contact the school via the office email. |

Home Study Club |
|
Home Study club is an opportunity for students to undertake either Home Study or further school work using the schools IT facilities. It is held every lunchtime in IT3 and after school Monday – Thursday 3pm – 4pm in IT2. The Home Study club is supervised by a member of staff who is there to help support the learning, if requested. This is a quiet working room available to all students who wish to take advantage of it.
This room is particularly important for those students who:
- Do not have reliable access to IT.
- need support developing good habits and routines of working outside of timetable lessons.
- need to keep school separate from home. Especially students who struggle to cope with the distractions of technology.
- Need a quiet place to work away from younger siblings.
If you do not wish for your child to take advantage of the Home Study club, I would strongly encourage students adopt a ‘lesson 6’ to their normal day. This then becomes a set routine: come in from school, have a snack and a drink, settle down to home study or retrieval practice, revision or additional work if no home study is set. Do this before the TV or games console is put on. This time works best when a student treats ‘lesson 6’ like school with phones put away. Ideally this work should be done downstairs and where someone is able to check in on them. At the kitchen table where a parent is able to take an interest at the end of the hour would be the best situation. I appreciate this will not be possible for all households. Please ask your child to show you their work and discuss what they have been doing celebrating their successes.
If they are unable to do this at home we would recommend the Home study club. |
